Hvar attractions
Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, located off the Dalmatian coast.
The island measures approximately 80 km, east to west and is a tourist destination.
The road that connects the town of Hvar on the west and Sucuraj on the eastern
side of the island is 84 km. Hvar Island is its surface mostly covered with pine
trees which makes a very pleasant climate and vineyards that produce up to 50
000 hektolitara of wine annually. The Island has a network of roads. Jelsa, Hvar
and Portadown have been merged with modern road tunnel. A network of narrow and
bad roads connecting the whole island, from Sućuraj to Hvar. Regular ferry links
with the mainland dock in the Old Town and Sućuraj. Fast passenger ships connect
Jelsa and Hvar to Split. Hvar, the cradle of Croatian tourism, this year (2008)
celebrates
140 years of rich tradition of tourism.

Hvar is an island full of sights. Town loggia
in Hvar Town is on the north side of the bottom
part of the square. That which he recognizes,
and that is its long waterfront, Arsenal, a big
Pjaca, Mandrać, Loggia, the cathedral, well,
fortresses and walls, monasteries, palaces. The
Palace was already completed in the middle of
the 14th century as an impressive building with
four towers. The Cathedral of St Stephen in Hvar
Town stands at the far end of the Pjaca. It was
built on the site of an early 6th century Christian
church. Present appearance the Cathedral received
in the 16th and 17th century. The exceptionally
suitable maritime character of the port of
Hvar determined the Arsenal - the very early
building of the shore facilities and the arsenal.
Jelsa
- charming bay in the northen coast of island
Hvar. Fishing, vine and olive oil making is a traditional in this welcoming
resort. It was
a homeland of many famous captains and seamen,
and among them was Niko Dubokovic, the most prominent captain. As a
small town and port it
was first mentioned in 14th century, but discoveries
from the Neolithic, the Roman and the Illyrian times testifiy how old
the history of the
island actually is. In the 70-ies of the 19th
century the Park of Jelsa was completed and within it we can find the
statue of the captain Niko
Dubokovic. Cultural - historical monuments
in Jelsa: Civitas Vetus Ielsae, Sv. Mary, Church of Our Lady of Health,
Sv. Deadline, Sv. Michael,
Lapidary, Park, Pjaca, Trg Sv. Ivana.
